If Sugar Was As Sweet As You by Joe Tex
If Sugar Was As Sweet As You by Joe Tex
Label: Dial 4026 Year: 1966 Condition: M- Price: $25.00 I first heard the excellent B side as done by Rockpile (Dave Edmunds and Nick Lowe), but there's nothing to beat the original. How does stuff like this get buried on the B side of 45's? Who knows, but that's one reason why 45 collecting is so rewarding! Of course, the A side on this one is wonderful too. Note: This copy has a small drillhole and comes in a vintage Atlantic-Atco Records factory sleeve. It grades very close to Mint in appearance (Labels, Vinyl) and has Near Mint sound with a minimum of light surface noise.

The Byrds (EP) by Byrds
The Byrds (EP) by Byrds
Label: Columbia SP 10287 Year: 1970 Condition: M- Price: $75.00 This incredible, rare 4-song EP not only has a gorgeous psychedelic picture sleeve, but also 4 of the group's best, less-played nuggets--two of which are among the four Byrds tracks on Dave Marsh's list of the 1001 greatest singles ever made! The first song was previously unreleased and is itself a Byrds classic of the first order. It appeared on an LP about the same time as this promo EP, entitled "Untitled/Unissued". The four songs are:Lover of the Bayou (McGuinn-Levy) So You Want To Be A Rock And Roll Star (McGuinn-Hillman) Goin' Back (G. Goffin-C. King) Chimes of Freedom (B. Dylan) The record was issued for Scholastic Book Services in conjunction with a book about the Byrds issued by Scholastic Books. Note that the EP label has a custom imprint of the Byrds "logo". A very cool collectable indeed!

Freedom (Where Have You Gone) by Blue Jays
Freedom (Where Have You Gone) by Blue Jays
Label: Map City 307 dj Year: 1971 Condition: M Price: $30.00 Stereo/Mono promo copy. This is one of a handful of singles by a mid-Atlantic soul group produced by Vince Poncia on the obscure Map City label he founded in 1969 with songwriting partner Pete Anders. (Anders-Poncia were also known as the Tradewinds and wrote a number of great, classic songs for Kama Sutra and its associated labels until leaving to form Map City.) "Freedom" has a wonderful, complex arrangement with a great beat and superb lead vocal. The horn parts sound just like vintage Chicago, and then they throw in an electric guitar to the mix! This beautiful copy has pristine Mint audio.

You Haven't The Right by Catalinas
Label: S.E.I. 16535 Year: 1964 Condition: M Price: $15.00 From a warehouse find, this is a new, unplayed stock copy. This is the first release of these very appealing Northern Soul tunes, on a tiny Charlotte, NC, label... They were picked up by Scepter in 1967 and re-released. Note: This beautiful copy has no notable flaws, grading Mint across the board (Labels, Vinyl, Audio).

Queen Of All My Days by American Flyer
Queen Of All My Days by American Flyer
Label: U.A. 874 Year: 1976 Condition: M Price: $9.00 From a warehouse find, this is a new, unplayed stock copy, in its original factory sleeve. Now, here's an interesting single: The A side is a pleasing, mid tempo Country/Folk Rocker, the group's only chart tune; the flip is more adventurous, with an infectious rhythm that proves as catchy as the hit side. Behind the great grooves is a short-lived "supergroup" with an impressive pedigree: Craig Fuller (Pure Prairie League), Eric Kaz (Blues Magoos), Steve Katz (Blood, Sweat & Tears) and Doug Yule (Velvet Underground). Oh, also, at the production wheel is famed Beatles producer George Martin. Both tracks are from the "American Flyer" LP, though the A side label notes that this recording is a "Re-mix by Nick Jameson," so it may be a bit different than the album cut. The B side is edited from a 3:10 album track. Note: This copy has pristine Mint labels and audio, and the vinyl (styrene) is graded Near Mint to reflect a couple of light storage-wear scuffs.

Rubberneckin' by Elvis Presley
Rubberneckin' by Elvis Presley
Label: RCA 9768 Year: 1969 Condition: M Price: $60.00 You may wonder how Elvis Presley got categorized as Northern Soul, as on this terrific track. But take a listen to the female backing vocals, that awesome bass line, those horns and hand-claps, plus the wild drumming, and you'll hear what I mean! It's just too bad the label doesn't credit the producer or arranger of this little jewel. Also, this single wasn't included on any contemporary Presley albums... it was a non-album single. Note: This beautiful copy comes in a nearly flawless picture sleeve with an original small retail price sticker on the back. It has no notable flaws, grading Mint across the board (Labels, Vinyl, Audio).

Wide Boy by Foghat
Wide Boy by Foghat
Label: Bearsville 49779 dj Year: 1981 Condition: M- Price: $12.00 Stereo/Mono promo copy. Well, this one is just too good to let waste away in obscurity. Probably too poppy for Foghat's usual fans, it still sports some top-notch guitar work. And it's an absolutely perfect little slice of power pop! The picture sleeve has a great group photo on the back, as well as the full song lyrics. It has pristine Mint audio.

Hey Lucinda by Betty Everett
Label: Sound Stage 7 1520 dj Year: 1976 Condition: M Price: $20.00 Stereo/Mono promo copy. Here's the best evidence I've heard yet that there was definitely life for Betty Everett after the 1960's. This has got to be one of the hottest soul tracks I've heard lately... Smokin'! Note: This copy comes in a vintage Sound Stage 7 Records factory sleeve. It has no notable flaws, grading Mint across the board (Labels, Vinyl, Audio).

I Don't Need No Doctor by Ray Charles
Label: ABC/TRC 10865 Year: 1966 Condition: M- Price: $35.00 Here's a beautiful copy of this dynamite Northern Soul dancer, with a rhythm section that just won't quit! Absolutely essential Ray Charles. This amazing 45 appears to be a non-album single. Note: This copy comes in a vintage ABC-Paramount Records factory sleeve. The labels are Mint except for a tiny dabs of gold paint. which lowers the grade to Near Mint. The vinyl looks untouched, and the audio grades pristine Mint. Part 2 by Bill Black's Combo
Part 2 by Bill Black's Combo
Label: Hi 2018 Year: 1959 Condition: M- Price: $25.00 Of course, it was Part 2 that became a huge hit for Bill Black and his Combo in late 1959. If you own only one Bill Black single, this is the one. As many of you know, Black (who was white) was the bass player who recorded with Elvis Presley on most (if not all) of his early Sun singles, along with Scott Moore on guitar and D.J. Fontana on drums. "Smokie" was his first solo single (or at least the first to chart), and the A side is quite a bit different--more upbeat--than the hit B side. Note: This beautiful copy comes in a vintage Hi Records factory sleeve. The audio is very close to Mint.

No Wheels by Chordettes
No Wheels by Chordettes
Label: Cadence 1366 Year: 1959 Condition: M- Price: $40.00 What a cool release... The A side is an out-and-out girl group take on the Coasters' "Yakety Yak" chore troubles, while the B side features Jeff Kron speaking the blues about his car troubles, accompanied by the Chordettes. Great picture sleeve, too... both sides are different. This is one of only two Chordettes picture sleeves that were released, and it's definitely the best one. Oh, and if that isn't enough, both tracks feature King Curtis at his honking best on the tenor sax. Note: This beautiful copy has Near Mint labels with a faint name on them (hard to see). The audio sounds very close to Mint. The picture sleeve is Near Mint.

He Made A Woman Out Of Me by Bobbie Gentry
Label: Capitol 2788 Year: 1970 Condition: M- Price: $12.00 This is a beautiful stock copy, in its original factory sleeve. Here's another piece of evidence that Bobbie Gentry had the makings of a truly great soul singer. Here, she puts in a dynamite performance of a tune that Betty Lavette had recorded the year before. With the help of Rick Hall and the Fame house band in Muscle Shoals, AL, it's a southern soul treat that tastes just right!

Singles, 1966-69 by Velvet Underground
Singles, 1966-69 by Velvet Underground
Label: Sundazed 201 Year: 2009 Condition: M Price: $75.00 Here's a beautiful, limited-edition box set honoring New York's legendary Velvet Underground. This new, sealed set includes all of the group's very rare 7" vinyl output in their original mono versions, featuring exact reproductions of the labels and, in two cases, with their original picture sleeves. The box set includes rare vintage photos and new liner notes by Rolling Stone's David Fricke. The Velvet Underground whose hip included Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison, Maureen Tucker, Doug Yule and Nico introduced numerous sonic and thematic innovations that laid much of the groundwork for punk and alternative rock. Although they're now acknowledged as one of the most influential bands in rock history, during their existence the Velvets barely ed on mainstream radar, and were often reviled by mainstream observers as well as hippie-era arbiters of cool. But, as Fricke writes in the new set's liner notes, "Somewhere, in another rock & roll universe, the Velvet Underground are more than a legendary band. They are stars, with hit singles, the original seven-inch masterpieces inside this box." Although they never came close to scoring a hit, the Velvet Underground was ideally suited to the 7" single format. "The Velvet Underground were a great singles band," David Fricke notes, adding that the Velvets "invented modern rock with searing guitar distortion, throbbing improvisation and brutally realistic tales of life on the wild side. But they did it all in these classic pop songscompact miracles of raw drive, intimate beauty and Top 40 ecstasy, heard again in the original, thrilling mono single mixes." The seven singles included in The Velvet Underground Singles 196669 comprise the four Velvets singles originally released in the U.S. on the Verve and MGM labels, plus an additional pair of singles that were prepared for release but never made it to the marketplace and a special radio-only promotional single. The singles feature alternate mono versions that differ in significant ways from the songs' better-known stereo album versions. For instance, the band's 1966 debut single "All Tomorrow's Parties" appears here in a special mono edit that amplifies the song's melodic beauty and sonic tension, and a mono mix of their sophomore single "Sunday Morning" emphasizes the song's haunting quality. Meanwhile, the mono single version of "White Light/White Heat" exemplifies the vintage Velvets' stark, distortion-laden fury, while a mono edit of "What Goes On" accentuates that song's inherent pop jangle. Here is a listing of the included singles: All Tomorrow's Parties / I'll Be Your Mirror—Verve VK-10427 Sunday Morning / Femme Fatale—Verve VK-10466 White Light/White Heat / Here She Comes Now—Verve VK-10560 White Light/White Heat / I Heard Her Call My Name—Cancelled single Temptation Inside Your Heart / Stephanie Says—Cancelled single What Goes On / Jesus—MGM K-14057 VU Radio Spot / VU Radio Spot—MGM VU-1

I Finally Found The Love by Rena Scott
I Finally Found The Love by Rena Scott
Label: Epic 10864 dj Year: 1972 Condition: M- Price: $22.00 Stereo/Mono promo copy. The overwhelming feeling of joy in this performance is truly infectious... And notice that what's been found is not just "love" or "a love," but "The love"! How radio failed to notice it is beyond me, but don't you miss out! I'm adding a snippet to the Classic 45s jukebox so I can keep the sound handy. :-) Note: This copy comes in a vintage Epic Records factory sleeve. The A side label has very light ringwear (doesn't show up well in the scan). The audio, I'm pleased to say, is pristine Mint!
